Take Back the Planet!

Epic Games, the brains behind the popular game series Fortnite dropped a new role-playing game that will have you assemble a band of heroes to save the planet. Battle Breakers is a cartoon-inspired video game that you can play on your mobile phones. A passion project by a small team at the game development giant, it features hero-collecting gameplay and epic brawls. If you are looking for a new game to try, you should check this one out.

Heroes Assemble

The story of Battle Breakers started when the kingdom, which was at peace, was attacked by monsters from space without warning. Smashing into the deep ground, they’ve taken over the world and trapped all the greatest heroes in a technomagic crystal. Now, it is up to you, the player, to take back the planet—one break at a time.

The game comes with more than 1,000 dungeons that you can explore, and these dungeons span across volcanoes, forests, glaciers, and more. Moreover, there are also three modes which you can play, namely the Battle Pass, Skybreaker Quests, and the Hero Store. In all of these, you have the power to build a team of heroes that you want. To make it more exciting for you, you will have hundreds of heroes to choose from, including knights, ninjas, robots—even dinosaurs. With this, you can collect an arsenal of powerful heroes ready to save the world with you.

If the game gives a wide selection of heroes, it also has big bosses that you need to beat. And with enemies being at par with your heroes, you can expect epic battles to ensue. You can unleash massive attacks and special abilities to take down the bosses and even smash through legions of monsters.

Peculiar Mix of Familiar Games

Epic Games reveals that Battle Breakers is a free-to-play frenetic RPG inspired by Saturday morning cartoons of the 80s. This resulted in the game looking a peculiar mixture of Power Ranger's cheesiness, OTT JRPG character design, and a morsel of Fire Emblem-ish elemental tactics with shallow but tactile tapping action.

Breaking down the gameplay, players start the game with a gang of six heroes located at the bottom of the screen, each having their abilities and elemental disposition. The game will basically have you tapping gem-like tiles to reveal more game board. Some of these gems come with treasures that you can collect while some hide enemies that you will need to fight.  And speaking of fighting enemies, the fights of the games are effectively turn-based affairs. Just tap the enemies you want to fight with and the hero from the team that you want to use in the battle. The combat is also simple and very much like Fire Emblem. However, you need a couple of tactical considerations to ensure your win.

Either Love It or Hate It

Epic Games are known for introducing great games, but unfortunately, Battle Breakers is still not on that level. Sure, the game has got good points that can probably make you download it on your phone. For one, it’s free. Also, a lot is going on with the game that will keep you engaged—from the tactical gem-tapping to hitting a screen-filling big boss with a special attack. However, the cheesy mixture of familiar game elements and very old-school design might put you off. But whether you consider this game as your kind of thing or not, there is no denying that Epic Games can still marry screen-tapping and swiping mechanics with visual pyrotechnics.
